Teki Latex Coming to The Social

Teki Latex
This coming Monday, what better way to finish the new (and much needed) Family Day long weekend than with Parisian ladiesman Teki Latex at The Social.

Teki Latex, is one third of French Elecro-Hip-Hop-Rap group TTC (not to be confused with our amazing public transit system). He is also co-founder of Hip-Hop/Electronica record label Institubes.

Shawn Fogel has a Good Day in the Desert

Shawn Fogel
Listening to Shawn Fogel's new EP, One Day in the Desert, bounce back and forth between rootsy alt-country tunes and peppy power pop anthems, it's hard to believe that this NYC-based multi-instrumentalist was originally inspired to be a one-man-band by Stevie Wonder's Innervisions LP. As Shawn explains, "It blew my mind how one person could create such an amazingly skilled and tight sound all by himself."

On Tuesday night, Footwork celebrated its eight year anniversary at its resident home Andy Poolhall.

Footwork Tuesday's, hosted by Toronto's finest Dj Fase, has become a legendary weekly night, where you know you'll find good music, good people and some dancing going on no matter what. In some way it's like having a good friend that you don't see every day, but he is always there for you when you need him.

Call & Response: The Phonogarde

Call & Response: The Phonogarde
Not into the commercialism of Valentine's Day but love to hit the town for a good cause? Online fundraising group GiveMeaning presents MusicGivesMeaning tomorrow night at The Cameron House.

This innovative benefit concert is like no other I've participated in. Your admission will be given back to you as you enter the Cameron House in the form of a GiveMeaning "giftcard" with a unique pin number. Each performer has selected a specific charity they're playing for and they will talk about it during their set. After the show, you choose which charity you donate to over at the GiveMeaning website.

There are two shows scheduled, both starring Craig Cardiff. Opening the late show are mysterious rootsy folksters The Phonogarde. I spoke with Christian from the band about alternate band names, a place called Sleepover, and bad burritos.

Ladies Bring a Little Warmth to Wavelength 399

Ladies Bring a Little Warmth to Wavelength 399
After hibernating all weekend I decided to step out last night to catch Wavelength 399. Despite the bitter cold, there was a good-sized crowd out at Sneaky Dee's to catch two solid female-fronted bands.

Video Games Live gives Toronto an Encore

Video Games Live
What do you get when you cram almost 2,000 gamers into Massey Hall with an orchestra and choir reliving some of their fondest memories? Well, for one, you get a hell of a lot of Nintendo DS pictochat sessions going during the intermission.

What can really be taken away from Video Games Live's near sell-out performance on Saturday night was a spectacular rendition of some of the most memorable and epic music in gaming. Keep on reading for impressions and video highlights of the show.

Video Games Live Brings Back the 8-bit

Video Games Live
Do you get that lovely nostalgic feeling when you hear the Super Mario Bros. theme? Get goosebumps when the epic Hyrule Field strings come together from the Legend of Zelda? Well, video game and music geeks, it's your time to come together. Video Games Live, the spectacular orchestral music event featuring music from some of the most memorable games of all time, is coming back to Toronto this weekend after two years touring the globe. Call & Response: Flash Lightnin

Call & Response: Flash Lightnin
Local classic rock revivalists Flash Lightnin have been holed up in the warm, shadowy depths of The Dakota Tavern for quite some time now. You can catch them there every Wednesday night. Other than that residency (and a mysterious deal with Flash Records), they are virtually unknown in Toronto.

Until now. It appears as though two high profile bands have taken a liking to their sound: Halifax alt-rock sensations Wintersleep (who asked Flash Lightnin to open for them at the Phoenix last week) and Metric, who wrangled them for their sold out Sound Academy gig tomorrow night.

I spoke to Darren Glover from the band about apostrophes, playing dice with Jimmy, and boots.

In the DJ Booth With the Degrassi Girls

Caitlin from Degrassi as a DJ.jpgSpike and Caitlin from the TV series Degrassi Junior High are now guest deejays at a monthly '80s dance night called In Between Days.

Last Friday, I braved the elements and hit up The Annex Wreckroom and was rewarded with a really fun '80s dance party with guest DJs Spike (DJ Demanda) and Caitlin (DJ Mistycious).

The two TV actresses -- Spike is actually Amanda Stepto and Caitlin is Stacie Mistysyn -- take turns doing 30 minute sets and posing for photos with their fans. The duo have been friends since the Degrassi days.

Spike no longer has the spiked hair, but shows her punk cred with several colourful tattoos. And Caitlin is, well, as pretty as she was as a teenager in the late '80s.

By the end of the night, the Degrassi girls are partying it up on the dance floor too.

As episodes of The Muppet Show flash on the giant screen behind the dance floor, I ask "Caitlin" if she prefers dancing or deejaying and she says she likes both.

"When I'm playing a song I really like, I want to dance. So I end up dancing in the DJ booth."

Besides this DJ gig the first Friday of every month, Stepto and Mistysyn are working on their own TV show called OverXposed.

More of life after Degrassi, including photos from their DJ night after the jump....
